Meet Me at MOMA Memory Tours

An estimated 5 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease. The number of Americans with Alzheimer’s disease will continue to grow – by 2025, the number of individuals with Alzheimer’s could increase to 15 million. Research has clearly demonstrated that viewing works of art can stimulate the brain, which helps to slow the process of dementia and Alzheimer’s.
The Utah Museum of Fine Arts in partnership with the Arts in Caring Council provides a Memory Tour for seniors with dementia. This picture shows Alzheimer’s patients participating in an interactive “string art” exhibit at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts on the campus of the University of Utah. Any organization currently working with or coping with a person with Alzheimer’s is welcome to attend these tours.
Looking at art can be a rich and satisfying experience for people without full access to their memory. “Art” – the great equalizer provides a simple expressive outlet and a forum for dialogue. Programs, such as “Meet Me at MOMA Memory Tours” may also help to eliminate the stigma associated with this disease, leading to early detection and treatment.
